The Fellowship of Sinners

Confession

Tom Joseph

"Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results."

~James 5:16

I. False Confession

  • No true change.
  • Produces more destructive behavior.
  • Continues in the cycle of dysfunction and abuse.
  • Criminals eventually confess but repeat the same crime once they are released.

II. True Confession is Not Codependent

  • Just confessing to avoid conflict.
  • Confessing falsely to win another's love.
  • Becoming a sacrificial lamb or a scapegoat for abusive, sinful, or dysfunctional people by confessing to them never pays off.
  • Confession is not self pity or complaining.

III. True Confession

  • Produces fruits of righteousness and productivity for the individual and the unit as a whole.
  • Relieves the soul of guilt, shame, bitterness resentment, and pain.

IV. Conviction in the Heart & the Conscious Mind

  • Burying your hurts and pains of the past and never confessing.
  • We can bury our hurts so deep they only manifest themselves in certain behaviors.
